LONDON — Land Rover is reportedly planning to bring out a front-wheel-drive version of the forthcoming 2012 LRX crossover — something new for the maker of rugged go-anywhere SUVs. An all-wheel-drive LRX will still be the main Land Rover product, though. The 2012 Land Rover LRX is slated to debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show in the fall.

Land Rover is reportedly looking to offer a more fuel-efficient product, a sign of the times, and the small LRX is a logical candidate for the FWD offering in the SUV maker's lineup. The concept version of the LRX first saw the light at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show as a hybrid biodiesel-powered "cross-coupe."

The four-wheel-drive LRX will be out first, and is expected to get a new name — with Autocar in the U.K. saying the Range Rover Compact is one possible moniker — and a 185-horsepower 2.2-liter diesel engine sourced from PSA Peugeot Citroen. Gasoline and hybrid versions are in the works, reports say.

Autocar says the all-wheel-drive LRX will cost the equivalent of $52,000 and up, while the FWD version will be priced starting at about $43,900.

Inside Line says: Land Rover stalwarts must be fanning themselves with their pith helmets right about now. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent

When working with GEMS vehicles. Never try to locate a misfire by pulling plug leads off - pull the injector connector instead. Otherwise you can blow up the ECU.

Secondly never swap ECUs between vehicles to test them, because both vehicles and ECUs may stop working, and you'll have to have them all reset by a franchised LR dealer (ouch!).
