Unhappy Loud Thumping Acceleration Noise.

I have a 2005 LR3 and in the last month my car upon acceleration from a stop sometimes (but not always) makes a loud thumping noise until my car is at about 10 miles and hour or I take my foot off the gas then re-apply. I took it into the dealer describing the noise as a bad wheel on a grocery shopping cart how it makes that thud noise thru the store. They heard the noise however my car threw no errors when hooked to diagnostic and it is a guess at what it could be. I’m sure some of you know Land Rover guesses at the dealership can be pretty expensive and the problem not always fixed. Has anyone had this happen before? The noise is coming from the front of the car when it does happen and not the rear. They suggested a new Rear Transfer Case? This is a pretty expensive suggestion… with no guarantee that will correct the noise. Paid over 200.00 dollars for a software update they said may correct it and it didn’t. So at this point not sure what to do?

How many miles are on your LR3, and is there anyway you can record the sound and email it... maybe record inside the vehicle and even better from under the vehicle.

Also Does it make the sound if you apply the brakes at the same time you hear it? Does it make the noise in Reverse?

When working with GEMS vehicles. Never try to locate a misfire by pulling plug leads off - pull the injector connector instead. Otherwise you can blow up the ECU.

Secondly never swap ECUs between vehicles to test them, because both vehicles and ECUs may stop working, and you'll have to have them all reset by a franchised LR dealer (ouch!).

It would be hard to record the sound. You can hear it but you feel it more. It does not happen when you brake, it only happens for example when stopped at a light, light turns green and you proceed with the gas into a left hand turn it is like the car is attempting to shift gears and the gear is missed. I have a light foot so it is not from fast excelleration. They just replaced my idler arm that had gone bad but that as well did not fix the problem. I have around 90k on the rover. Purchased it used so of course have no maintance records on the car.

Sorry, what I meant was when you hear the noise, while still giving it gas, press the brake slightly (just enough to start to brake) and see if the issue continues.) Also does it only happen in left turns or does it happen when going straight or right turns?

Re: thumping noise on accel.

Had similar problem for long time, many attempts at various solutions ... proved to be loose exhaust mount allowed exhaust to contact frame upon accel. When engine torqued on accel, or turning, or up hill when starting from standing or low speed accel.. Produced a loud noise and vibration in cabin.
Hope this helps.

Question Loud Thumping Acceleration Noise

Did anyone else have this problem. I know the thread is old but mine started doing this exact same thing. Sounds like a blown out tire. As soon as I let off of the gas, noise goes away. Thought it was the locking diff trying to engage. Any other thoughts

Hello everyone,

I know this is an old thread.

Has anyone had this issue and if so, which was the fix applied?

Thank you all
