Fuel Injector Removal

I am having a little trouble with taking the fuel injector manifold off to remove the heads. Looking at the layout of the intake manifold it seems easier to take the injector mainfold and the intake manifold in one piece, has anyone done it this way? This is not what my service manual is telling me to do.

I would lean more toward the service manual as it tends to be a wee bit more accurate than my guess gauge.
